At the Rhythm of Faith

As always the Penha keeps an alliance to the Sacred, coexisting uninterruptedly with the religiosity. The heart of the mountain always beat to the rhythm of the faith of the pilgrims, who knew, over time, how to lend devotion, affection and generosity.

The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Penha dates back to September 1702 and had for base on the devotion of a hermit named Guilherme. Coming from a nearby town of Rome, the devotee, inspired by God, placed an image of the Virgin Nossa Senhora among some large crags in an inhospitable place to be adored by the faithful who visited him. Deceased the hermit, the place was occupied by the religious Carmelites shod. At the same time, the Senhora became to be called Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha.

On July 18 of 1873, the Pope Pius IX granted a plenary indulgence and remission of all sins to the faithful Christians abiding of devotion to Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha.
This devotion of Vimaranenses was increasing and gave rise to the first great pilgrimage to the Penha in 1894.

It is in the enclosure of the Sanctuary that every year, thousands of faithful are concentrated on the imposing Pilgrimage to the Penha as happened in 2003.

The first major pilgrimage to the Penha occurred at September 8 of 1894..
